Why Is Oil Change Service So Important?

Why Is Oil Change Service So Important?

For gasoline-powered vehicles, oil is crucial for lubricating the moving parts of their engines and dissipating heat so it won't cause damage. Without a fresh, clean supply, your powertrain components will experience more friction, which can lead to premature wear. Gunk will make your engine run inefficiently, and overheating could eventually cause it to cease running altogether.

Recommended Volvo oil change frequency is usually every 7,500-10,000 miles. This amount could equate to half a year of driving for some people but closer to a year for others. Owners of new Volvo cars benefit from three years of Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance,2 allowing them to get up to three Volvo oil changes from a full-service Volvo dealership like ours without paying out of pocket.

While our technicians already pride themselves on their efficiency and thoroughness, this added element makes getting a Volvo oil change in Fairfax, VA, that much more convenient.

What Are Signs You Need an Oil Change?

What Are Signs You Need an Oil Change?

While your owner's manual should include your vehicle's specific Volvo oil change interval, you often encounter unexpected things while driving. Keep alert for the following indicators that you need to schedule an oil change sooner rather than later:

  • Your "Check Engine" or "Oil Pressure" light turns on. In Volvo cars, the first symbol often looks like a miniature engine, while the second resembles an oil can with a single drip falling from it.
  • Your engine starts making louder noises than normal or producing unusual knocking sounds.
  • You smell oil or burning.
  • You notice excessive amounts of exhaust smoke.
  • Your Volvo car starts shaking while it's idling.
  • There's a dark puddle under your parked vehicle.
  • You're using up more gas than you normally would without an obvious reason for it.
  • You check your dipstick, and your engine oil is dark and gritty or doesn't reach the appropriate levels.

While some of these issues listed above may have other causes besides old oil or an oil leak, that doesn't make them less concerning. Investigate any unusual behavior from your car to protect your safety and reduce the risk of having to pay for more extensive repairs later on. We also suggest coming by for an oil change if you anticipate a major road trip to ensure your vehicle is in excellent condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does a Volvo car need an oil change?

Volvo models often need oil changes at least every 7,500-10,000 miles. We recommend taking advantage of the Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance2 provided when you buy a new Volvo SUV, like the Volvo XC60 or Volvo XC90, to get oil changes at the 10,000-, 20,000-, and 30,000-mile mark. However, certain vehicles, model years, or driving conditions may prompt you to need oil changes sooner.

Do Volvo cars need special oil?

Volvo vehicles usually thrive best on synthetic oil from specific brands like Castrol. However, different cars and SUVs may prefer different oil types, and the model year of your vehicle also plays a part. Consult your owner's manual or talk to one of our service technicians to determine the exact kind you need. Our team may also suggest Volvo recommended oil with different viscosities, depending on the season.

How often do I need to change synthetic oil?

Synthetic oil often needs to be replaced every 7,500-10,000 miles, which is much less frequent than conventional oil. It also has other benefits, such as being more resistant to extreme temperatures, which can be helpful for those who live in Fairfax, VA. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual for more specific instructions about your car's oil type and maintenance schedule.

Featured Customer Review for Volvo Oil Change Service In Fairfax, VA

"Great experience at Volvo Fairfax! I had my second maintenance last year and need to get third one recently. I visited other Volvo dealer and they denied third complimentary maintenance since my car mileage was over 35K. Customer Service told me that dealer can deny the service if the mileage is over at some point. So I called Volvo Fairfax, they welcomed me and scheduled an appointment at that day. ‘KYAW’ advisor was so friendly and kindly answered any questions. He recommended me to add tire rotation service, it costs for that service but I was really happy to do that. They did car wash and provided complimentary Lyft ride. I would like to visit this location for any service needed in the future!!" 5 stars, review by YuJeong Kim, 06/05/23
